For a long time, motorcycles are one of the embodiments of true masculinity. When you hear roaring engines and wind hitting the riders’ helmet, you can’t help but imagine yourself as a wild west sheriff riding a steed of steel.

Today, the popularity of MotoGP, World Superbike Championship, Isle of Man TT, and MotoCross and Supercross makes the sport even more popular among men, women and children spectators. The two wheelers do bring people together, and what better way to enjoy motorcycle races than to participate in motorcycle betting?

In this article, we’ll be exploring what motorcycle betting looks like, how it works, and how to get started at Gambulls.com!

Types of Motorcycle betting

You first need to know that there are two main ways you can participate in motorcycle betting — the “regular” way and live betting. Regular betting involves placing your bets before the actual race occurs, while live betting takes place during the race but before the event outcome occurs.

In this guide, we’ll look at one event outcome, which is the outright winner. In other words, who will be the champion among all, throughout the season? Of course, on the day of the race, there is still about an hour of race time as the final competitors pit against each other for the outright winner status.

This makes it possible for live betting to occur on the day of the race. Now, since this article is written a month before Season 3 of MotoGP 2023 World Championship, we’ll only cover the regular betting mechanics as live betting is currently not available for that sporting event.

How to access the Motorcycle Betting feature

On Gambulls.com, participating in motorcycle betting is easy. From the homepage, find the navigation slider on the left hand side. Then, find the Sportsbook tab and click on it.

Find the sport that you want to bet on. You can use the search bar to find “motorcycle betting”. Once you find the result, make sure you’re on the Motorcycle Racing tab like you see below.

Great, now this is all the outcomes you can bet with regular sportsbook betting. Go ahead and explore the options. In the demo, you’ll see that there is currently no Live Betting happening right now.

Also, for motorcycle racing, we don’t typically get daily matches, unlike in other sports like Football, Boxing or MMA during an active season. The upcoming event, Moto3 World Championship, will happen in a single week.

For any sportsbook betting at Gambulls, the Outrights tab is where you’ll find people spend most time at, seeing that many betting markets are collected here.

And if you don’t know yet, a betting market is simply a statement of betting outcome (e.g. Jaume Masia will win outright) and the associated risk and reward you’ll get (the Odd Type, which we’ll talk about soon).

Motorcycle betting concepts you need to know

Now that you’ve accessed the betting page, you should be familiar with the bet odds. If not, here’s a quick explainer on the bet odds, which are the numbers that accompany each betting market.

If you move your mouse towards the top right corner, you’ll see the Odd Type. This drop down will simply change the format of the numbers, but will not affect your odds in any way. But it’s still important to understand how each of the Odd Types work.

Understanding Odd Types

The three main formats used to present odds are American, European (Decimal), and Traditional (Fractional). Hong Kong and Malaysian odds are just a variation of any of the three.

American odds primarily show potential financial gains. Positive odds (+) represent the possible return on a $100 bet. For instance, a bet with +200 odds has a chance of returning a profit of $200 in addition to the original $100 stake.

American odds that are negative (-) represent the wager required to win $100. These odds frequently apply to favorites. If the odds are -150, for instance, you must wager $150 to win $100. The odds of even money (+100 and -100) signify an equal payout. A $100 wager at +100 odds results in a $100 profit, while a $100 wager at -100 odds results in a $100 profit.

Odds in decimal form are easier to understand. Odds like 2.00 mean that you will receive $2 back along with your stake for every dollar you bet.

Fractional odds, like 5/2, indicate a potential profit of $5 for every $2 wagered, or a profit of $2.50 for every dollar wagered.

Why is it important to understand the odds?

Have you ever invested in the stock market? You do your research on which companies are performing well, but sometimes the price in the market doesn’t reflect the performance of the company.

In betting, the odds give you a clue as to what other bettors believe. If you look at the last image, notice that Jaume Masia is given a 1.33 odd. This means that if you bet $100 on him, and you’re right about his victory, you’d be given $133 back (that means with $33 of profit).

But let’s suppose you believe Ayumu Sasaki will win this season, and you’ve done your research to support your belief. According to the sportsbook, there are fewer people rooting for Sasaki, because he’s got bigger odd numbers.

A bigger odd number doesn’t mean that the racer will have a bigger chance of winning in the eyes of the bettor — quite the opposite actually. Because there are fewer people rooting for Sasaki, the sportsbook bookkeeper is willing to pay much higher for the fewer people if they happen to be right.

In your case, if you’re right about Sasaki being the outright winner, you get a payout of $496 for every $100 that you bet. Sometimes, it’s good to go with what the crowd believes (the notion of crowd wisdom). Other times, going against the crowd (and being absolutely right) could yield a higher reward!

Strategies to consider in motorcycle betting

Of course, don’t rely solely on the sportsbook numbers! Actually, do your research. Figure out who you want to root for based on a racer’s past performance, attitude towards winning and losing, training, past injuries, age, and more.

External factors could even become such a game changer. When it rains during a race, and the track gets wet, the underdog who had special training on racing on wet surfaces could suddenly become the most favored racer of all.

This is where live betting comes in handy when external or even internal conditions change the real probabilities of winning.

Motorcycle betting tips for beginners

Betting on motorcycle racing can be an exciting and potentially rewarding endeavor, but like any form of sports betting, it’s important to approach it with knowledge and strategy. Here are some beginner tips for motorcycle betting:

  1. Understand the Basics:

Start by familiarizing yourself with the basics of motorcycle racing, including the different racing series, types of motorcycles, and the rules of the sport. Knowing the key terms, race formats, and how races work is essential.

  1. Study the Circuits:

Different racetracks have varying characteristics and layouts. Some circuits favor certain types of motorcycles or riders. Knowing the circuits and how they might impact the race can help you make informed bets.

  1. Keep an Eye on Weather:

Weather conditions can significantly affect motorcycle racing. Rain or adverse weather conditions can create unpredictable outcomes. Be sure to check the weather forecast leading up to the race.

  1. Manage Your Bankroll:

Set a budget for your betting activities and stick to it. Avoid betting with money you can’t afford to lose. Responsible bankroll management is crucial to long-term success.

As a beginner, it’s a good idea to start with smaller bets until you become more confident and experienced in motorcycle betting. Over time, you can adjust your betting amounts based on your comfort level and results.

  1. Stay Informed:

Stay updated on the latest news, injuries, and developments in the world of motorcycle racing. This information can provide valuable insights into the potential outcomes of races.
